Autumn Essentials: Layer by Layer

We’re mid-September and, much like the general theme of 2020, anything could happen! Don’t panic, we’re only talking about the weather... Because with the arrival of autumn comes unpredictable, changeable conditions.

Based on the principle that professional riders must continue to race and train all year round, our R&D and Product team have designed a wardrobe that, using just a few technical garments, offers a solution to every weather condition autumn decides to throw at us. Trained and raced in by pro riders, and also available for you.

“We don’t believe in having a wardrobe full of clothes, but rather a wardrobe containing a few specific technical garments.” - Mat Danel, Head of Product and Merchandising.

So far, we have been blessed with an extended summer - but fresh starts, earlier sunsets and ever possible rainfall can make it difficult to decide what to wear for your ride. You can leave home at 9am under 10ºC and return 5 hours later when it's over 20ºC. Add to this "a chance of rain" and "possible winds"... Well it's no wonder autumns unpredictability can put people off cycling. But it shouldn't, because these are issues that can be managed simply by choosing the correct clothing.

When it comes to Autumn Essentials, the KATUSHA Lab is focussed on creating technical apparel that can be worn all day long. Our R&D team have researched, tested and selected clever fabrics that react accordingly, so that despite being faced with changes, you can maintain an ideal body temperature and microclimate.

These are our autumn essentials, layer by layer, designed specifically for unpredictable, changeable weather.

Technical Base Layer

Your base layer is the foundations of your outfit and as you wear it from the start to the end of your ride, it needs to be a solid choice. We offer 3 base layer suggestions:

Superlight Base Layer

Designed to be super lightweight, breathable and moisture wicking. Ideal for warm autumn rides, high tempo rides/races, or for riders who run hot.

Windblock Base Layer SS

For the chillier, windy rides, our Windblock Base Layer is the Superlight with windblock fabric on the front panel. It’s still breathable and lightweight, with an added layer of protection.

Seamless Base Layer

When the temperature drops, adjust your outfit by wearing a warmer first layer. Our Seamless Baselayer is made with is made with Meryl® Nexten hollow polyamide fibre which is seamlessly knitted with a body mapping structure. As a result, sweat is effectively wicked away from high sweating zones and increased insulation is achieved in areas that require it most, such as the shoulders and stomach. The hollow structure of the fibres also trap air to create a microclimate that insulates the body.

Performance Second Layer

The layer you wear above your base layer really depends on the temperature, which at this time of year can vary quite considerably, not just day to day, but hour to hour.

Icon Jersey

For warmer days, we recommend the Icon Jersey. Built from a mixture of 37.5® Technology fabric and mesh, it is the heavier option of our jerseys, but still light weight with offers excellent moisture management. For an extra layer of protection, add the Light Wind Vest and Seamless Arm Warmers (scroll down for more information).

Warm Jersey

The extended summer sadly won’t last forever, so when the temperature drops you need to be ready with a warmer second layer. Our Warm Jersey offers a superb solution for riding in a variety of conditions. It can be used with a thin base layer for warmer weather, paired with thick base layer for milder winter riding or function as a middle layer underneath a jacket during very cold days in the saddle. Fleece lined, stretch fabric provides superior comfort and body hugging fit.

Light Softshell Jacket

As long as it's not hammering down with rain, our Light Softshell Jacket is all you need for cooler weather riding. It will protect you from the wind and cold temperatures between 5 and 15 degrees, it has a waterproof membrane and partially taped construction to protect you from light rain, and it's extremely breathable so that you'll remain dry on the inside even if you push your limits to the maximum. Put simply... It's warmer and more protective than a jersey, but lighter and more breathable than a jacket.

For those that prefer something a bit brighter, to be more visible in low light, it's available in coral. Otherwise there is the all black option, still fully equipped with subtle reflective detailing.

We also realise that everyone responds differently to temperature, so the Light Softshell Jacket comes with either short or long sleeves.

Bib Shorts

Icon Bib Shorts: Maximum comfort for warm rides

Developed for riders who spend long days in the saddle, or for those who require extra protection.

The ICON redefined. Featuring new ergonomic line technology that works in synergy with the TM Evo 3D Pad. With a stronger yet lighter fabric construction and 3D Body Fit suspender design, the ICON Bib Shorts set a new benchmark in all-day comfort.

We offer two bib short options that will have you feeling warm, cosy and protected through cool and wet weather conditions. Fleece lined, reflective, durable and water repellent so that you can stay on your bike even when the weather turns sour.

Warm Bib Shorts

Our Warm Bib Shorts are lined on the inside with extremely soft Super Roubaix fleece to keep you warm and cosy. The outside of the fabric has been brushed with a water repellent treatment to keep you dry from light rain, or to protect you from road spray. Merino Bib Shorts

For those with a preferece for natural fabrics, we have introduced the Merino Bib Shorts. They offer the perfect blend of natural strength, breathability and moisture management of merino wool, lined on the inside with Super Roubaix fleece. Like the Warm Bib Shorts, they have been brushed with a water repellent treatment to keep you dry from light rain, or protect you from road spray. Unlike the Warm Bib Shorts, the Merino Bib Shorts are built with the TM Evo Pad, which is perfect for long days in the saddle and features ample padding at the front to provide long lasting comfort and additional source of warmth.

Light Rain Jacket

Weather conditions can be unpredictable and so the Light Rain Jacket is versatile. “One for all”, pocket sized protection for many weather situations, whether you’re expecting them, or not.

Light Wind Vest

Store it in your jersey pocket and put it on to keep warm during long descents in the summer, use it as an additional layer on cooler days in the saddle, carry it just-in-case when riding in changeable weather conditions. The Light Wind Vest offers wind protection for your chest and shoulders, breathability at the back and easy access to your jersey pockets when you need it.
