There are plenty of good reasons to train with a sling trainer such as TRX, and whether it’s for a professional cyclist, a commuter or a week-end warrior, the benefits are there for all. At Team KATUSHA ALPECIN the riders all use the TRX suspension trainer throughout the season and in the off-season as well. During training camps in December and January, every morning starts with time with the suspension trainer. But besides looking rather impressive, what are the specific benefits?

“The number one answer for using sling training to achieve long-term benefits involves prevention of injuries. Using the trainer teaches balance in the muscles and helps eliminate or correct injury patterns,” explained COROX trainer Michael Pointvogel. Learning to counteract the imbalances helps protect the body from unnecessary time off the bike: fewer injuries equal more time in the saddle. Another long-term benefit of sling training is the practice of stabilising the muscles and teaching them to work together in perfect harmony. Short-term success is also available and is especially important to a cyclist in that learning to stabilise the core muscles ultimately leads to a stable pelvis. When riding a bike for four to six hours a day in a race, day after day, up to more than three weeks in a grand tour, a stable pelvis keeps the rider in optimal position on the bike. No shifting from side-to-side is necessary if comfort is found in the stable, even position on the bike. Another benefit can be seen in improvement of the leg axis. A straight leg axle allows for better power transfer to the pedals, and of course, it’s all about the power.

It’s important to note that the TRX device can go anywhere. For KATUSHA ALPECIN riders, our COROX trainers produce individual training programs for all the riders during the camps and they go away with their equipment and a program to work on. Almost every rider carries his TRX in his luggage to every race, so there is never an excuse to skip the sling training.
